Dollhouse: the first good episode

We interrupt your normal blog posts to bring you this special announcement: Dollhouse had its first good episode.

I just saw last night’s Dollhouse. Awesome! I’ve been quite disappointed with the series in general (though I’d still follow Whedon to the ends of the earth) but this was the first episode of the series that actually felt like a good episode.

While it pains me to say that, “Bella Chose” really was the first episode that easily blended humor (for every character), strong plots, a non-pushy message, and… just a sense of ease. This episode, penned by Whedon alumni Tim Minear (more…)

Finale Watch: Live bloggin’ the finale of Dollhouse

In honor of Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Slezak, I’ll be live blogging the final of FOX’s Dollhouse.  I’ll try not to cry at what may be the finale of the third canceled Joss Whedon show (after Firefly and Angel).

9:01   Okay, we get it. Alpha is awful. He’s a slice and dicer. Icky scars. I didn’t really need to see Victor’s face get slashed again. Speaking of Victor, I am glad that Joss Whedon brought Enver Gjokaj to the semi-mainstream.

9:02   Where’d Ballard go? He was talking with the uppity ups at the end of the last episode.

9:03   Why are all Southern characters trashy, horny, and criminal? Hey, is that the Lohan trifecta? Seriously. There are plenty of other trashy people to make fun of… Jersey Shore… I guess their accents are quite as appealing. (more…)

FOX’s Dollhouse “Event” Episode Review

After being advertised by FOX as a Dollhouse “Event”, I feel a little cheated. If anything, the previous episode in which Echo’s origins were revealed within a tight, funny plot should have been the “event.” Tonight’s episode (above) was just a giant, messy tease.

The commercials, put on this earth to deceive and annoy viewers, made us believe that the actives organically started to remember their previous lives. The main plot is their attempt to escape. While the episode was technically fine, I didn’t really feel it.

Of course my blind faith in Joss Whedon tells me that the episode was off because it was written by a writer I’ve never (more…)

New York Comic Con: Day 3

Entering the world of Comic Con for the first time was a doozy. Not only did I see my creative hero Joss Whedon, I also saw in-person gorgeousness of Tahmoh Penikett and Joshua Jackson. Growing up in Texas, I never had access to either of the coastal Comic Cons. I was the weird one growing up, incessantly talking about what just happened on Buffy the Vampire Slayer or worried about whether Serenity would ever get made. On February 8th, 2009, in a little convention center in Midtown Manhattan, I found my people.

I got there around 11:00am, expecting to see all of the panels I wanted—NBC’s Chuck featuring producers Josh Schwartz, Chris Fedak, and star Yvonne Strahovski, FOX’s Dollhouse featuring creator Joss Whedon and star Tahmoh Penikett, and FOX’s Fringe featuring writer/director Jeff Pinkner and all of the stars including Joshua Jackson, (more…)

Trailer Tuesdays: EPIC Edition

trailer

Face it, there are things that are cool, there are things that are awesome, and then there are things that are above all of those. And the only word to describe those things, is EPIC. EPIC things are indescribable, and this weeks trailers include many EPIC premises and ideas.

EPIC Battle—Monsters Vs. Aliens: Although I haven’t been a fan of recent animated tales from Dreamworks, Monsters Vs. Aliens looks not only awesome because it has monsters AND aliens, but it looks to parody many of the classic science fiction films. Add in the lovable Seth Rogen as a blob, and you’ve got a great movie. (March 2009)

EPIC Long Movie—Che: IFC Films has finally put the first word out of Steven Soderbergh’s four and a half hour non-biopic of Che Guevera, starring Benicio Del Toro. Although this trailer gives the flash of a Cuban Lawrence of Arabia, I saw the film at NYFF it is more of an academic experience that anything else. Still, the trailer highlights some of the film’s more exciting sequences. (December 12th)
