HBO series filming on Claremont

“Boardwalk Empire,” an HBO TV series directed by renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese, is filming on Claremont today only.

The sleuthing required to find this was very little. When filming in a public area, all production companies must post signs stating the name of the production and its company as well as the dates that it films in the location. Occasionally, an alias is posted for the show title so as to detract from on-lookers.

That was what I thought had occurred this time. “Boardwalk Empire” doesn’t sound like it would take place in a cold climate, but it was in fact the real name of the show. The series itself is supposed to take place in Atlantic City, where there is a popular boardwalk, so I was obviously mistaken.

According to the Internet Movie Database, the show “Chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson, the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.”

Documentary explores delayed justice in Rwanda

The trials take place in the open air, as the prominent villagers sit in the paltry shade of a shack and crowds of children move about the hillside. The alleged crimes are incomprehensible; a man quietly states how he and his community brutally massacred his neighbors over the course of weeks. The backdrop is lush with vegetation, and the villagers survive through subsistence farming.

My Neighbor, My Killer takes place in Rwanda, following the procedures of the Gacaca court, an informal system of justice established in 2001—seven years after approximately 75% of the Tutsi population was murdered, often by neighbors who had known their victims all their lives. (more…)

“30 Rock” and James Franco team up for big laughs

Liz: Did you dye your hair?

Jack: No.

And just like Jack’s hair, “30 Rock” hasn’t changed one bit over the holiday hiatus. Continuing to provide quick, sharp, and intriguing television, Thursday’s “Klaus and Greta” episode features Columbia’s own James Franco convincingly playing a slightly more troubled version of himself.

Plagued by a Japanese newspaper’s “rumor” that he is in love with Kimiko, a body pillow bearing the image of a bikini-clad Asian woman, Franco and his agent approach attention-craving Jenna to arrange a faux relationship in the hopes of dispelling the “myth.” In a scene poking fun at Hollywood’s contrived relationships, Franco stipulates the terms of the contract: “five dates a week, one fight a month, and because of product placement agreements with Jamba Juice, the fight will take place in a Jamba Juice.”

CC senior in the ‘Millionaire’ hot seat

Matt Velazquez, CC ‘10 and a former Spectator sports editor, will be competing on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” on January 13 and 14 at 12:30 p.m. on ABC.

Did you study up or, like a true Columbia student, just wing it and hope for the best?

I decided that there was no practical way of studying so I just did a lot of Sporcle and hoped for the best. I’ve never been much of a studier anyway, so this strategy was pretty true to my character.
