Pop it like it’s 1985: Only Hearts Vintage Pop-up Store

Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” is the theme song that comes to mind upon entering Only Hearts’ vintage pop-up store, OH:POP, in NoLita. “Pop-up” is a bit of a misnomer, since the store location normally houses Only Hearts’ current collections, but until January 1st it’s giving itself over to the past – namely one-of-a-kind lingerie from the late 70s, 80s, and early 90s. The best part, though, is that this vintage is actually brand new. As Stephanie Krey, the store manager, said: “It’s never been worn before so it’s not creepy.”XX

Only Hearts, the eponymous New York inner and outerwear line, opened in 1978 and is currently designed by Helen Stuart. She, along with the SoHo store’s buyer, personally sifted through the archives at the corporate office in Midtown. Luckily for lingerie fans, they photographed and catalogued the pieces for posterity and are passing on the actual items of clothing to the public. These include racks of teeny white nighties embellished with flowery stitch and pale pink ribbon ($100+), delicate bra and panty sets in swirling paisley or heart patterns ($50+), flouncy skirts in leopard or jacquard print, and old-school sexy chiffon body suits ($150+). These last are Krey’s favorite, “All bodysuits are really cool – they’re in right now just as they were in the ‘80s.”

Unfortunately, since they are from the archives, this also means that these pieces are sample sized and not so friendly to anyone with a curvier bust or waist. This, however, is where the accessories selection comes in. All things lacey, frilled, and, of course, hearted are offset and modernized with buckled high-top leather sneakers ($155), roughed-up Frye boots ($455), fingerless leather gloves, and troves of vintage jewelry. There are also several pairs of awesomely bright red heart sunglasses, which, at $12, might be the best buy in the store.

The pop-up’s décor is an ode to the 80s as well. Hand painted posters for movies like “Sixteen Candles” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” sit side-by-side with vintage magazine pages featuring Only Hearts wear.

It’s hard not to get dragged down by the prices (like $75 for a barely-there appliquéd garter), but hey, sometimes girls just need to have fun.

OH:POP Only Hearts pop-up store, 230 Mott Street between Prince & Spring Streets, open Monday-Saturday, noon-8p.m., Sunday, noon-7p.m. until January 1st.
