Everybody and Television: Penelope (of Pet Princess Fame)
My head fell off when I read this part of the recent Kristen Schaal interview in Punchline Magazine:
What does the future hold for Kristen Schaal?
Well, this just came up recently, but me and my friend Kurt Braunohler made this web series called Penelope: Princess of Pets, and it looks like we’re going to turn it into a pilot for Channel 4 in London. So yeah: this year, it’s going to be me trying to figure out how to make a pilot in London.
Penelope: Princess of Pets is silly, dark and never goes where you think it will. The series was created by New York PIT improvisers and comedians Kristen Schaal (who also appears on Flight of the Conchords and the Daily Show) and Kurt Braunohler, and they play Penelope and her orphan friend in the show. Penelope: Princess of Pets is about a girl who can talk to animals, only more mind-blowing. I demand that you watch all nine episodes of it right now:
Find the rest of the episodes here: Episode 2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6, Episode 7, Episode 8, Episode 9
The Apiary followed up with Braunohler to get more details on the show and how the pilot will differ from the internet version of the show:
Essentially, the producers want to ground us in our relationship on the show. That’s what they said was most important to them. And Kristen and I have a tendency to write jokes based on concepts, so they want to make sure it’s a pilot not based on a concept but rather based on a human relationship. So Kristen and I both want to make sure that when people watch this pilot, they’ll get excited about the relationship between Kyle, Penelope and Ruby.
If you’ve watched the above episodes in compliance with my orders, then you’re already familiar with the wondrous, weird, turning-into-cardboard type of concepts that constitute some of the series’ best jokes. I can’t wait to see how the show explands into a full-length television episode. And I apologize for being so demanding about all of this, but I just wanted you to know I was serious.
