Bon Voyage: Music to Get You Through Any Family Vacation
If you’re taking a trip this break—or just fantasizing about laying on the beach somewhere far away from your parents’ house—the right playlist for the voyage is essential. Here are my top ten songs for sleeping in the car, airplane, boat, or hot air balloon on the way to someplace wonderful.
1. Jose Gonzalez: Hearbeats: A beautiful, acoustic cover of The Knife’s song. Done by Gonzalez, the song sounds entirely new.
2. Beach House: Heart of Chambers: The most eerily lovely song from the Baltimore duo. Perfect for staring out car windows.
3. Miles Davis: Blue in Green: You can’t argue with a classic. This tune always makes me melt a little.
4. Au: Boute: A slowly building, breathy piano heavy gem complete with enough “la-las” to get you through any sub-par voyage.
5. Cat Stevens: Trouble: Always makes me think of Harold and Maude, no matter where I am in the world.
6. Bon Iver: For Emma: So cozy, it always makes me want to wrap up in my airplane blanket and look out those tiny windows at the clouds.
7. RjD2: Smoke and Mirrors: A little creepy, a lot wonderful, this track keeps travel boredom at bay.
8. Vetiver: Been so Long: This song has the twangy guitars, sweet lyrics, and soothing vocals I’ve come to expect from Vetiver. Calming during a stressful traffic jam.
9. School of Seven Bells: Connjur: I have to admit… this song makes me fall asleep. But only because it is so dreamy.
10. Nick Drake: Northern Sky: Instantly transports you somewhere romantic and high in the mountains, where all songs are as gorgeous as this one.
