Trailer Tuesdays: Strange Times Edition

trailer

This week’s trailers all do with some really weird stuff, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to most normal viewers…

A Cool Nerd Movie?—Star Trek: What has JJ Abrams done to the beloved Star Trek series? He’s made it into an action film with lots of space fights, sex, and hot young people? Wait a minute…those things are awesome! The first full teaser for Mr. Lost’s new interpretation of the final frontier has turned it from a nerds only series to one that is definitely going to be a huge summer hit. (May 2009)

A Perfect Comic Book Adaptation?—Watchmen: The full (and probably final trailer) for Watchmen finally confirms all the hopes of the nerds across the world—Snyder has faithfully brought every element of Alan Moore’s “unfilmable” graphic novel together. Although he may have changed the ending (but as it sounds for the better—and one shot in the trailer might prove that confirmation), Watchmen looks to be the best comic book adaptation since…well The Dark Knight. (March 2009)

The Mayan End of the World?—2012: The teaser for Roland Emmerich’s latest epic disaster (which could be read either way) gives us enough to know. He is making the end of all end movies, by going off the Mayan prophecy that the world will end in December 2012. How this can actually be a full movie is inexplicable, and hopefully later trailers will show what is really going on, and why John Cusack needed a paycheck so badly. (July 2009)

Harrison Ford is actually doing this movie?—Crossing Over: Also in need of a paycheck is Harrison Ford in Crossing Over, which looks like Crash does immigration (hint: bad idea). With a lot of probably important speeches about life long lessons, the Weinstein company smartly pulled this from their December release for Oscars and to an unknown 09 release. (2009)

That Juno song in this 1950s Drama?Revolutionary Road: The latest trailer for the Oscar bait film Revolutionary Road uses the song “Sea of Love” from Cat Power over a series of images that get more dark. You will remember the song from the end of Juno, and here it gives an ironic effect. I’m still not sold by the movie, though I’m sure Mr. Dicapiro and Ms. Winslet will be spectacular as always (December 26th)
