NYFF Diaries: Weekend Preview

Lola Montes

If you haven’t gone to any screenings at NYFF yet, here are some reasons you should:

1. Rush tickets, which are available for almost every film, are only $10, which is cheaper than AMC Theaters this weekend, which run $12.
2. This article I wrote in which I interview selection committee member Kent Jones
3. There are some damn good films playing this weekend

Here’s some highlights you should check out:

Summer Hours—Oliver Assyass’ follows up his anti-action film Boarding Gate with this family drama about three siblings who must deal with the property left behind by the death of their mother. Juliette Binoche, probably one of the best French actresses of her generation, leads the cast. (Tonight, 9PM)

Gommorah—I think Manohla Dargis described this movie best at Cannes when she called it ‘City of God without the fun.’ This Italian flick, which won second place at the French Festival, tells five interlocking stories about the new Italian mafia in Naples. (Friday at 6pm, or Sunday at 9PM)

Lola Montes—Columbia Prof. Andrew Sarris turns 80 on Saturday, and gets a new restoration of one his favorite films of all time. It’s a real treat—Max Ophlus’ final film is beautiful and haunting. (Saturday, 11:15AM)

The Windmill Movie—When Richard Rogers died before he could complete his own autobiography documentary, his friend Alexander Olch picked up where he left of. This film tries to make sense of a friend, teacher, and friend in a wondrous way. (Sunday 6PM)
